Considered a business and medical tourism pillar, Mexicali signs an MOU with GrinGO to strengthen its border tourism economy.
(October 14, 2022 / Mexicali, Baja California) During the final week of its annual festival Fiestas del Sol, Mexicali City leadership gathered to celebrate the signing of an MOU with Phoenix-based GrinGO. The MOU highlights the intent to cooperate on joint marketing and promotion initiatives stimulating the continued re-activation of Mexico tourism post-Covid and to support U.S. tourists in the region with travel safety resources, advisories, and information along their travel journey in BAJA.
GrinGO’s communication systems will welcome inbound U.S. tourists through GPS-enabled push notifications with a message from Mayor Norma Bustamante in the form of a ‘Bienvenida’ (welcome) which then goes on to inform the visitor of real-time travel and health advisories, local health protocols, and ends with the promotion of a touristic point of interest and/or special cultural event happening that week.
“Mexicali is known as the beer capital of Mexico with dozens of top awarded artisanal beers brewed right here in Mexicali. Our city hosts dozens of cultural events each year to enjoy a cold beer and taste our growing Gastronomy scene. A partnership with GrinGO will help assist the City and local industry with targeted outreach efforts to attract new tourists.” says Miguel Torres, President of COTUCO Mexicali.
The economy along the border thrives on cross-border tourism. Mexicali and its surrounding municipality of Los Algodones each year attract thousands of U.S. tourists for the purpose of low-cost Medical Tourism. Los Algodones has even grown to carry the nickname “Molar City” as it is home to more than 500+ dentists in just a few square miles. And at times that tooth needs to be fixed from eating too much Chinese food.
“If you happen to be in Mexicali on a Sunday, expect to get invited for Chinese Brunch, as it’s the local tradition,” says Brian Krupski, Founder, and CEO of GrinGO.
Mexicali has a deep history dating back to the end of the 19th century when a significant migration of Chinese people traveling to America fled political and economic changes in their country and arrived in Mexicali with hopes of crossing into the United States, but eventually stayed in the city. This community gradually prospered with early generations starting as workers and later becoming established merchants. The first generations settled in the city’s square, where they opened up bars, restaurants, shops, and what we now know as La Chinesca. La Chinesca, or the Mexican Chinatown, protects the origins of a city founded on Chinese traditions and offers visitors the opportunity to experience a fusion of two cultures in one. Visitors visiting the Chinesca museum can descend into the basements and underground tunnels built under the city that take you on a trip back in time.
